The sego lily stands 3.2” to 19” (8 to 48 cm) tall, and blooms from April through June. The genus name “Calochortus” is from the Greek kalos, translated as “beautiful,” and chortos, or “grass,” referring to the leaves. The species name “nuttallii” honors Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859), a botanist, ornithologist, and curator of the Harvard Botanic Gardens. The sego lily is the state flower of Utah.
