The California poppy is a low-lying perennial, growing 5” to 12” (13-30 cm) tall along the Pacific slope. As the official California state flower, the poppy’s yellow, orange or red flowers bloom in early spring, attracting thousands of visitors to view “super blooms” after heavy rainfall seasons. The poppy’s four colorful petals close at night or when temperatures drop, then reawaken with the sun each day.
